RDE552 Understanding the natural functioning of ash regeneration

We require outputs from the recent Bunce Survey to be analysed to inform an ongoing study into the variables that may contribute to differences in natural selection and regeneration rates of ash (Fraxinus excelsior) in woodlands in England. A few sites in Norfolk are showing unusually high levels of regeneration of healthy young ash trees. This work is required to identify factors that may promote similar regeneration more widely throughout England, by understanding relevant environmental conditions and genetic variation. The Bunce Survey provides an ideal dataset to query, being reasonably comprehensive across the UK and in the number of variables recorded. This project needs to a) Interrogate the Bunce survey data for sites with presence/absence of early stage ash b) Use multi-variate analysis to identify variables which may be potential drivers of patterns in ash regeneration c) Use the results of this to produce lists of sites that may be surveyed and a draft survey protocol, to feed in to the ongoing project: TH42326N13 - Recovery of Ashwoods from Ash Dieback. d) If necessary/beneficial, explore the possibility of adding additional sites.

RDE594 Biochar in Paludiculture & Water Quality Phase 2

The Lowland Agricultural Peat Agenda The reduction of emissions from lowland agricultural peat, through more sustainable hydrological management has been recognised as a key policy driver in reducing Carbon emissions and reaching Carbon Budget 6 targets. The independent Lowland Agricultural Peat Task Force, reported in 2023, setting out a number of Recommendations to take forward the Policy Agenda, with expected implications for the Environment Agency 's core business. The new Policy direction of wetter farming and/or paludiculture advocates methods of economically viable farming whilst raising water table levels from their current, significantly drained, positions. The wider benefits and potential risks of the new direction on the water environment and biodiversity in our lowland peat landscapes is currently has numerous identified evidence gaps.

RDE620 Developing a salt marsh carbon code

During FY 23/24 (Phase 2a) we let a contract with UKCEH to launch a Beta Version of the UK domestic Saltmarsh Code, this has included the design of monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) procedures; producing carbon calculators; and exploring code governance and ownership models. As well as designing the code itself, drafting it to a pilot phase.   During FY 24/25 (Phase 2b) we will expand on this work, and by Summer 2025 version 1 of the UK Saltmarsh Code will be available for pilot sites to use, following a testing stage and further development of key areas identified within Phase 1.

RDE590 National seagrass nutrient survey 2024-2025

As part of Year 3 of the marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment Programme (mNCEA), the Environment Agency are running a project called the Land-Sea Interface (LSI), which aims to improve the evidence of ecosystem services in key estuarine and coastal habitats, such as saltmarsh, seagrass and shellfish beds. This project will build on last year's work (2023-2024) and aims to address the evidence gap in the rate at which nutrients (N and P) are removed from the water column and sediments by seagrass and mudflat habitats through denitrification. Specifically, it will target the evidence gap of how different seagrass beds and mudflats across the country with different characteristics (particularly sediments type) influence denitrification. The evidence from this project can then be fed into the Cefas Combined Phytoplankton- Macroalgae (CPM) model. This will enable us to better understand the full range of services and benefits provided by our coastal natural capital assets.

RDE588 Annual saltmarsh nutrient survey 2024-2025

As part of Year 3 of the marine Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment Programme (mNCEA), the Environment Agency are running a project called the Land-Sea Interface (LSI), which aims to improve the evidence of ecosystem services in key estuarine and coastal habitats, such as saltmarsh, seagrass and shellfish beds. This project aims to build on the work that was complete last year (2023-2024), which developed a method, in partnership with the University of Bangor, to measure saltmarsh denitrification rates. This year's project will provide more evidence to help us understand the rate nitrogen (N) is removed from the water column and sediment by saltmarsh habitats through denitrification. Specifically, we want this study to show to measure any temporal change and to investigate how seasonality influences saltmarsh ability to process nutrients. The deliverables of this project (and of the 2023-24 one) will be used to fill evidence gaps in the updated Combined Phytoplankton-Macroalgae (CPM) model and improve our natural capital assessments of natural and restored saltmarsh habitats. It was recommended by Cefas that the CPM model would benefit from seasonal data on saltmarshes, to understand how seasonal changes influence the ability of a marsh to process nutrients.
