RDE768 Expert support for the UKBCEP Greenhouse Gas Inventory working group

The Greenhouse Gas Inventory Working Group was commissioned by the UKBCEP in 2024 to build on existing work to inform the UK's approach for considering inclusion of coastal wetlands in the UK GHG Inventory. The working group has been using the report 'Defining saltmarsh and the roadmap for its potential inclusion in the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Inventory', led by the UKCEH, to determine its workplan. The working group is chaired by Cefas and relies on the expertise brought to the group by its members. The group currently meets every 6 weeks with at least one in-person meeting each year. Cefas are looking to secure the time of experts from the UKCEH to attend and contribute towards working group meetings and activities throughout the year. This will include attendance at both online and in-person meetings, where feasible and input into workplan preparation as well as ad-hoc correspondence between meetings, where relevant.

RDE496 Assessment of Tier 1 and Tier 2 emission factors for saltmarsh

The IPCC's 2013 Wetland Supplement (Chapter 4, IPCC, 2014) has set out the methodological guidance for the quantification and accounting of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals associated with the management (e.g., drainage, rewetting, extraction of sediment) of coastal areas, specifically mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrass meadows. However, there are major gaps in our current understanding regarding GHG emissions of these ecosystems, as well as the source of carbon within accumulated sediments. The recent report titled "Defining saltmarsh for potential inclusion in the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) Inventory" by Burden et al. (in review) to the UK Blue Carbon Evidence Partnership, details a roadmap for saltmarshes to be included in the GHG inventory. One of the key data requirements is "Step 6: Assessment of Tier 1 and Tier 2 emission factors for saltmarsh". This proposed project will allow the development of the Emission Factors (EFs) calculators, determine uncertainties, and understand whether there is sufficient data to replace Tier 1 EFs with country-specific Tier 2 data, and if not highlight further research areas.

RDE719 Pesticide residue analysis - laboratory validation

This project will involve UK CEH analysing a set of 20 honey samples for a suite of pesticides. The same samples will also be analysed by Fera in a separate piece of work. This will enable a comparison of the reported pesticide residue values between the two different labs, which will allow us to: a) identify and benchmark any anomalies; b) validate the approaches taken by both labs; and c) ultimately give us confidence in using both labs for residue analysis into the future. Aims This project will need to: • Quantify pesticide residues from organic honey samples that were spiked with pesticides last year (10 samples stored under ambient conditions and 10 frozen). • Undertake a comparison of quantified residues from UK CEH analysis and Fera analysis. • Develop proposals for next steps depending on the outcomes. • Report all the above findings into Defra.
