This is a Contracts for Innovation (previously SBRI) competition funded by the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The aim of the competition is to develop solutions to fusion energy challenges in two key priority areas. The competition has 1 theme: Novel shielding materials and technologies for fusion. We expect to fund a number of projects. Each project should be delivered by April 2026. Each project can range in size up to total costs of £250,000, inclusive of VAT. SBRI Competition Fusion Industry Challenges - Novel Concepts for Robust Diagnostics Systems, Sensing and Control

This is a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) competition funded by the UK Atomic Energy Authority. The aim of the competition is to develop solutions to fusion energy challenges in two key priority areas. The competition has two themes Novel concepts for robust diagnostics systems and Robust components for sensing and control. A total of up to £2.8m inclusive of VAT, is allocated to this competition. We expect to fund a number of projects. Each project should be delivered by August 2025. Each project can range in size up to total costs of £250,000, inclusive of VAT. Particle Detector Radiation Testing

UKNNL are working with a University to develop and trial a muon particle detector to be used to image shielded boxes during decommissioning activities at Sellafield. Whilst in operation the detector will not be shielded and as such will be exposed to the full radiation field from the waste boxes. As part of the research to determine the detectors suitability, it is necessary to understand the functionality of the electronic detector modules when exposed to radiation. After a successful test at a Co-60 gamma facility, this follow up testing will support further development of the detector.
