As a professional philologist whose research rests at the intersection of linguistics, anthropology, and the cognitive sciences, Dr William Short (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) has pioneered the development of an approach to the description of the conceptual systems of historical societies through the close analysis of language and text. As part of this research, Dr Short developed an innovative search engine technology that enables the identification of relations between concepts within large text corpora, independent of how those concepts happen to be expressed lexically. Seeing this tool’s potential to make searching textual data of all kinds more efficient, more productive, and more rewarding, Dr Short has launched Senseful AI to commercialise the technology for data providers hoping to offer advanced, sophisticated search functionalities to their users. We are looking for an Executive with the initial brief of the executive will be to: Phase 1 Opportunity validation and business plan creation Review existing business ambitions and options for optimal route to market and generate a viable business plan with realistic funding requirements built on sound market research Phase 2 Spinout approval Work with University of Exeter’s technology transfer office and founder academics to develop business case to obtain approval and sign-off for the spin-out company creation Phase 3 Complete necessary stages for being “ready to spin” including company formation relevant legal agreements. Phase 4 Securing seed investment into the company Achieve investor engagement, commitment and completing a Term Sheet and investment completion, to cover funding required by the business to deliver against the business plan.

(NU/1433-36) IndigoDX Ltd: Commercialisation of university research through provision of management skills to assist in successful spin-out company creation

1 in 5 adults in the UK suffer from urinary symptoms caused by an overactive bladder (OAB). Symptoms include urgency (a sudden compelling desire to pass urine, which cannot be deferred), increased frequency of voiding (both day and night) and urge incontinence (involuntary leakage accompanied by / immediately preceded by urgency). The Team wishes to establish a spinout company to produce a Dipstick-style test. Our discovery is currently being developed into a simple-to-use diagnostic tool used for (1) regular screening for OAB in adults, at a GP surgery, pharmacy or nursing home, and (2) to assess the effectiveness of treatments (companion diagnostic) and modifying dosing/treatments accordingly. Accurate and early diagnosis will improve treatment outcomes, eliminating the need for patients to have invasive and high-risk surgery-led second-line treatments necessary for advanced-stage disease. Currently there is no competition for a non-invasive biomarker-based test, and new product development activity appears to be very limited, suggesting an opportunity for ‘first mover advantage’ and to establish a standard. We require a driven executive to take this technology forward and build a compelling proposition for investment. The Executive will need to create a robust business model that is acceptable to the founders, develop and deliver pitch materials for investors and establish collaborative research projects. The executive appointed should have an appropriate background, ideally with experience of high tech starts ups, securing seed investment and establishing manufacturing facilities.

(NU/1433-37) NewCo: The Provision of Business Consultancy to Assist Commercialisation of University Research.

Cancer and neurodegenerative diseases represent major unmet medical needs. It is estimated that approximately 20% of oncogenes are transcription factors (TFs) and many are critical for carcinogenesis. The global Cancer Drugs market was valued at US$92Bn in 2019 and is expected to reach US$124Bn by the end of 2026. The global neurodegenerative diseases drugs market size was valued at US$35.5Bn Million in 2018 and is projected to reach US$63Bn by the end of 2026. Specifically, we plan to target three cancer related TFs, (ATF4 CREB, and ID1) which are implicated in a range of cancer types that include glioma, breast cancer, acute myeloid leukaemia, and the aggregation of a-synuclein and amyloid implicated in Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's disease respectively. The initial brief of the executive will be to: Phase (1) September 2022 - December 2022 - Work with Jody Mason and Uni TT team to review current targets, oversee screening programme and lead candidates and produce a viable 5-year business plan and associated pitch deck; Phase (2)September 2022 - December 2022 - Navigate University approval process, work with TT team to get approval from the University Commercialisation Executive Board Phase (3) January 2023-March 2023 – a. Act for the company in the spin out legal process and review the Articles of Association, Shareholder's agreement and IP licence put together by the University; b. Work with the Unit TT team to obtain founder academics’ and University approval for appointment as CEO. c. Provide to the University of Bath all matters necessary for Research England reporting requirements. Phase (4) January 2023-June 2023 - Pitch to investors alongside Jody Mason, secure seed finance, draft and submit Innovate UK proposal for preclinical funding Phase (5) The outcome of Phase 4 will provide seed finance and IUK funding for preclinical studies, which will be sufficient to employ the executive and drive preclinical development. Our vision is to solve the challenge of automatic sign language translation by using Artificial Intelligence (AI). We will do this by creating an AI platform that uses neural networks and deep learning to: Provide anonymization, consistency, and reliability to sign language interpretation • Generate sign language from text/voice. • Detect and understand sign language and translate to text/voice • Develop an interactive and dynamic product Our mission is to open the world for Deaf people, meaning Deaf people can communicate freely and easily with hearing people and provide access to information where none currently exists. This will be far safer, quicker, and cheaper than the current provision, meeting the UK and the EU Governments’ Green agenda. Professor Krasnogor saw an opportunity in developing a solution to the “Integration” problem that is generic for biotechnology and the life sciences beyond the specifics of these two projects. This is how the idea of establishing GitLife Biotech and the development of the CellRepo technology, as a versioning control system for engineered cell lines, including biotechnology microorganisms, in the cloud was born. The plan is to spin out GitLife Biotech Ltd in Q3 2022. To be able to spin out and take forward this opportunity, securing the involvement of experienced and appropriate business leadership is both essential and complementary to the existing technical staff and resource. Commercial and business skills are needed in addition to those in the current team. Moreover, it is clearly the case that Prof. Krasnogor and the current team will need to remain focused on the scientific and technical aspects of the company and be able to place trust in and be guided by experienced staff (ideally with sector experience, networks and VC contacts) who will run the day-to-day business operations and company’s strategic development. Thus, a talented and experienced CEO (Designate) to assist in the development of the business plans and forecasting needed to spin out the company from the University, as well as to provide leadership of GitLife Biotech, is needed. (NU/1433-32) mignon.ai: Commercialisation of university research through provision of management skills to assist in successful spin-out company creation

Newcastle University have developed a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) microchip architecture which is uniquely underpinned by logic-based AI. The microchip named mignon was fabricated in early 2021 and this work was led by Dr Rishad Shafik and Professor Alex Yakovlev of the Microsystems Group, School of Engineering at Newcastle University. The aim is to create a Fabless IP based spin-out company mignon.ai which will market and sell the design of customised hardware devices and semiconductor electronics systems all based on the mignon microchip. The company mignon.ai will develop and design the microchips and supply codes to clients to enable the synthesising of microchip, where all manufacturing of hardware will be outsourced. The team requires an experienced and appropriate business executive to progress this opportunity. The initial brief of the executive will be to: (1) Produce a viable 5 year business plan; (2) Obtain university approval for the venture; (3) a. Act for the company in the spin-out legal process and address all company formation matters; b. Obtain founder academics’ and Newcastle University (including the Head of Company Creation) approval for appointment as CEO. c. Provide to the appropriate university all matters necessary for Research England reporting requirements; (4) Secure (venture capital and other) funding Stage (5) will produce the funds by which the new start-up company can consider employing the executive going forward.
