IWM/2526/FM/3472: DUX Construction of New Fire Engine Shed

Imperial War Museums (IWM) is seeking tenders from experienced and qualified contractors for the construction of a new Fire Engine Shed adjacent to the existing Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower at IWM Duxford. This facility will serve as a critical operational hub for the IWM’s fire response team, supporting rapid deployment, equipment storage, and personnel readiness in a heritage-sensitive and safety-critical environment. The new building must be utility in style, prioritising functionality, durability, and low maintenance, while incorporating architectural features that complement the historic character of the surrounding site. The design must respect key planning constraints, including maintaining unobstructed visual lines from the Visual Control Room and ensuring the new structure does not exceed the height or footprint of the ATC Tower. Internally, the shed will accommodate three fire vehicles with appropriate spacing and emergency access features, alongside dedicated areas for equipment storage, breathing apparatus servicing, decontamination showers, changing facilities, and a watch room with CCTV integration. External works will include a floodlit vehicle manoeuvring zone, secure access to airfield taxiways, drainage infrastructure, and improved pedestrian pathways. The successful contractor will be expected to manage the project in accordance with airside safety protocols, environmental regulations, and a clean site policy, with works being completed by the end of March 2026. IWM/2526/FM/3462: Ground Source Heat Pump in Hangar 4 at IWM Duxford

Imperial War Museums (IWM) is seeking a qualified contractor to deliver the next phase of its low-carbon heating strategy at IWM Duxford. This project involves the installation of a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system in Hangar 4, replacing the existing oil-fired boiler serving office areas on both the north and south sides of the hangar. Phases 1 and 2 of IWM’s GSHP implementation have successfully covered Hangars 2, 3, 5, and Buildings 200 and 74. Heat energy is sourced from underground water via bored holes on-site, transferred through plate heat exchangers in Building 68, and distributed via an ambient loop. Phase 3 (the current tender) will connect to the existing ambient loop infrastructure already in place from previous phases. The scope includes detailed design development (based on a novated preliminary design), procurement, installation, and commissioning of all associated plant and equipment. A back-up electric boiler capable of meeting 100% of the heat load will also be integrated. All equipment will be housed within the designated plantroom. Access Code : 4E67D4UP37 This initiative supports IWM’s broader commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate action, aiming to reduce operational costs and set a benchmark for environmentally responsible practices in heritage and public sector buildings.
