Description

The Blue Belt programme is the UK Government's international marine conservation programme. It works closely with UK Overseas Territories to assist them in creating and maintaining healthy and productive marine ecosystems.

As part of this programme, the Cefas coastal processes team have been working on two projects in Anguilla and Diego Garcia, to help monitor erosion of the coastline. A large part of this work is helping to improve the understanding of the natural processes that are occurring on the islands through modelling and mapping the historic movement of the coastline. This is with an aim to create a database of historic and present coastal data, which can be used to determine an environmental baseline to advise coastal management decisions in the future.

Due to the remote location of these islands and small populations, background environmental data is sparse. Therefore, Cefas require satellite imagery of the islands over a range of dates for each island, in which the shoreline can be extracted to
