Description
This scope aligns to the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) commitment that the NHS Genomic Medicine Service will sequence 500,000 whole genomes by 2023/24. As was stated in the LTP, this commitment builds on the legacy of the ground-breaking 100,000 Genomes Project, that was made possible because of the unique partnership between Genomics England and the NHS. As part of this ambition, the LTP outlined that during 2019/20, seriously ill children who are likely to have a rare genetic disorder, children with cancer, and adults suffering from certain rare conditions or specific cancers, will begin to be offered whole genome sequencing. The scope also aligns with wider objectives, including: • Achieving the ambitions and NHS England & NHS Improvement's commitments set out in the UK Strategy for Rare Diseases; • Meeting the deliverables set out in the NHS England & NHS Improvement Personalised Medicine Strategy; • Aligning with the NHS England & NHS Improvement Cancer Programme deliverables in respect of molecular diagnoses for cancer; and • Government strategy for life sciences - life sciences sector deal.
