CEFAS24-07 Contract for the provision to provide subtidal Sabellaria surveys at Hinkley Point C

The Hinkley BEEMS (British EDF Estuarine and Marine Studies) programme is funded by New Nuclear Build Generation Company (HPC) Ltd. Through this programme, Cefas provide authoritative scientific information on the marine and transitional waters in the vicinity of potential new build nuclear power stations and require a competent supplier to deliver the following; Cefas require a supplier to conduct subtidal monitoring surveys for the Hinkley Point C (HPC) Nuclear New Build (NNB) project to meet regulatory environmental monitoring requirements. At HPC, the Sabellaria spp. monitoring programme focuses on mapping and assessing the condition (i.e. reefiness) of the subtidal biogenic reefs present on the seabed at Hinkley Point. The objective of the proposed surveys is to measure the spatial extent of the Sabellaria spp. by collecting high-resolution Side Scan Sonar (SSS) data of the area of interest and to ground-truth an area of the seabed with an Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar (ARIS) camera (Sound Metrics ARIS Explorer 3000) and RT3 rotator to confirm the seabed type and the presence or absence of Sabellaria spp. tube aggregations. A survey is required in Autumn/Winter for Financial Year 24/25 (November 2024 - February 2025) and a second survey in Spring (April/May) 2025. The specified 'Sound Metrics ARIS Explorer 3000' is required to ensure quality and data consistency with the previous survey, and therefore it is a requirement for the supplier to either own or be able to hire, the equipment for the survey. The Autumn/Winter survey extent comprises an area of 9.7 km2, with the Spring survey extent 5.3 km2, extending to approximately 4.5 km offshore from Hinkley Point.

CEFAS24-135 Contract for a ground truthing survey of The Wash and approaches

The Marine Protected Area (MPA) monitoring programme is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and through this programme, Cefas co-ordinates some of the evidence collection for the monitoring of MPAs in English waters. The Ross Worm Sabellaria spinulosa is a sedentary, epifaunal polychaete worm which builds tubes by consolidating particles of sediment (Limpenny et al, 2010). S. spinulosa is abundant in UK waters, largely existing in solitary form or within small, low-lying aggregations (Hayward and Ryland, 1990). However, under the right environmental conditions they also can establish dense colonies and form biogenic reefs. These biogenic reefs are protected as an Annex I habitat under the EU Habitats Directive (EEC, 1992), and Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) are designated for their protection. Important areas of consistently occurring reef have been found across The Wash where extensive areas of subtidal mixed sediments in the tide-swept approaches provide the right conditions for reefs to form, particularly in deeper waters. These reefs are an important but understudied feature of both The Wash and North Norfolk Coast (WNNC) SAC and Inner Dowsing, Race Bank and North Ridge (IDRBNR) SAC - named as 'The Wash and its approaches' hereafter. Requirement: With the aim of improving our understanding of the extent, distribution, and nature of S. spinulosa biogenic reef (i.e. reefiness) across The Wash and its approaches, Cefas are commissioning this contract to deliver a ground truthing survey. The evidence gathered in this acoustic survey will seek to allow for the identification of Annex I S. spinulosa reefs. This evidence will be used to support conservation advice, condition assessment and management of the WNNC SAC and the IDRBNR SAC, its designated sites and protected features, i.e. Reefs (including S. spinulosa biogenic reef) habitat. This information will inform statutory advice on MPAs and assist in the assessment of both SAC sites' condition.

CEFAS24-06 Contract for Sabellaria spp. monitoring surveys with an ARIS Camera

Background: The Sizewell BEEMS (British EDF Estuarine and Marine Studies) programme is funded by Sizewell C Limited (SZC). Through this programme, Cefas provide authoritative scientific information on the marine and transitional waters in the vicinity of the consented SZC new build nuclear power station and require a competent supplier to deliver the element described below. Overview of Requirement: Cefas require a supplier to conduct a subtidal Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar (ARIS) camera survey for the Sizewell C (SZC) Nuclear New Build project to prepare for construction activities. At SZC there are known offshore areas of the reef forming polychaete Sabellaria spp. The turbid waters in the Greater Sizewell Bay preclude the use of traditional underwater camera, however the seabed in the region has previously been successfully imaged with an ARIS camera (Sound Metrics ARIS Explorer 3000). Previous survey work, including ARIS camera imagery acquired at Sizewell is detailed in the SZC Environmental Statement Appendix 22C for further background context. The objective of the proposed survey is to ground-truth an area of the seabed with an ARIS camera (Sound Metrics ARIS Explorer 3000) to confirm the seabed type and the presence or absence of Sabellaria spp. tube aggregations. The specified 'Sound Metrics ARIS Explorer 3000' is required to ensure quality and data consistency with the previous survey, and therefore it is a requirement for the supplier to either own, or be able to hire, the equipment for the survey. The exact survey area will be derived from a preceding (separate) side scan sonar and bathymetry survey (anticipated Spring 2024), and therefore the exact survey area is not known, however the expectation is that it will be in the region of the offshore infrastructure (Figure 1), approximately 3 km offshore off Sizewell, in approximately 10-20m of water. The survey area is likely to be approximately 1.5 km x 1 km (1.5 km2) and is expected to cover a range of habitats including subtidal sand, subtidal rock (Coralline Crag) and subtidal biogenic reefs (Sabellaria). The survey is required in the Summer of 2024.
