Publicly Available Specification (PAS) for Large Hydrogen Ready Boilers

Development of Hydrogen-ready Industrial Boiler Publicly Available Specification (PAS) Decarbonising industrial processes is an important part of achieving our net zero ambitions, and a likely early off-taker of low carbon hydrogen. We will take steps to ensure this can happen by phasing out unabated fossil fuel burning in industry and supporting possible replacements. Therefore, the Department is sponsoring the British Standards Institution (BSI) to develop a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) for large boiler equipment that is hydrogen- ready. This standardisation document will be aligned to PAS 4444, developed for hydrogen-fired and hydrogen-ready gas appliances. We anticipate this PAS will develop a standardised definition for what constitutes a large 'hydrogen-ready' boiler that will give confidence to End-Users that this equipment can enable faster and cheaper fuel switching to hydrogen than would otherwise be the case.

Provision of Fast-Tracked Standards, referred to as a Publicly Available Specification (“PAS”), to Assess Safety & Efficacy of Methane Suppressing Feed Products (“MSFPs”)

An agreement with the British Standards Institution to developed a Publicly Available Specification (“PAS”) to assess safety & efficacy of Methane Suppressing Feed Products (“MSFPs”). The 2023 Carbon Budget Delivery Plan identifies the use of MSFPs as the single largest potential policy contributor to reductions in agricultural green house gas emissions. MSFPs work by reducing the amount of enteric methane that ruminants emit. Defra announced plans to incentivise the uptake of safe and effective MSFPs once suitable products enter the market (expected from 2025). The PAS will allow MSFPs to be assessed against the Food Additive Regulations. The PAS will allow efficacy and safety of MSPFs to be independently measured and assessed. There is currently no British or International Standard for assessing the safety and efficacy of methane suppressing feed products.
