Description

South Oxfordshire District Council require a building Contractor, experienced in works to historic or listed structures, to carry out remedial repairs, reinforcement and localised re-pointing works to the eastern retaining boundary wall at St Mary's Churchyard, Henley-on-Thames. The wall is developing structural issues as a result of age, load retention and tree root penetration.
The wall forms the boundary between the churchyard and the Relais Hotel, to the east of the churchyard.
The wall is approximately 22m long and 4.3m tall along its length, with a retained height of 3.1m. The height of the wall above the level of the ground in the churchyard, is approximately 1.2m. The wall is predominantly constructed of brick and flint media, with some infill timber and brick panels, with a plain tile and brick coping.
The wall is Grade II listed. Contractors with demonstrable experience in carrying out heritage works, those experienced in brick and flint restoration, or those who carry a relevant heritage construction accreditation (i.e. S.P.A.B, IHBC, NFB Heritage Approved Contractor), are encouraged to tender for this opportunity.
The majority of the works need to be carried out from the courtyard of the Relais Hotel, which abuts the western elevation of the wall. The remedial works briefly entail:
Partial demolition (and reinstatement) of brick planter to enable installation of concrete foundation pads and 4no. buttresses
Replacement of loose, blown mortar, brick and flint
Removal of medieval wooden beams, infilling with brick / flint
Localised repointing works to both sides of the wall
Partial demolition and reinstatement of a small section of the top of the wall, from the churchyard side
For full structural survey, photographs, specification / schedule of works and technical drawings, please see tender pack documents

Silk Road Steppe landscape Architect Procurement - RBGKEW1479

Wakehurst’s identity as a botanic garden is rooted in the rigour of its horticulture, conservation, and scientific research. The proposed Silk Road Steppe Landscape builds on this foundation, reinforcing Wakehurst’s global reputation as a leading site for ecologically inspired horticulture. The Silk Road conjures a sense of mystery, adventure, and cultural exchange. Spanning over 800 km of ancient trade routes between Europe and Asia, it traverses mountains, expansive steppes, bustling cities, and arid deserts. This region is among the most floristically rich and diverse on Earth, yet faces increasing threats from habitat loss, conflict, and industrial agriculture. The Silk Road also tells a compelling story of humanity’s deep-rooted relationship with plants—our reliance on them for food, medicine, and materials. Many of today’s edible, medicinal, and timber species trace their origins to the movement and cultivation of plants along these historic routes. It is this rich cultural and ecological tapestry that has inspired the concept for Wakehurst’s new garden. Estimated value is £1,700,000 including VAT.
