Description
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) was established in 1917 to commemorate the 1.7 million men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars. The CWGC built and continues to maintain cemeteries and memorials at 23,000 locations in more than 150 countries and territories and is committed to carrying out this work in perpetuity. In recent years, the CWGC has undertaken efforts to address the omission of the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice whilst serving in the allied regiments during the two world wars. Once such Regiment is the Sierra Leone Carrier Corps. In 2022, a Book of Remembrance listing more than 946 previously unacknowledged Sierra Leonean WWI dead was presented in Freetown. This act laid the groundwork for a permanent physical recognition of their service. CWGC commissioned Oshinowo Studio, a Lagos-based architecture practice, to design this permanent structure which will be located in the Ministry of Finance grounds on George Street, Freetown, Sierra Leone - https://w3w.co/shower.cactus.cabinets). This tender is being issued to select a suitably qualified contractor to build this unique new Memorial.
