Description

Decision support tools support shared decision making by making treatment, care and support options explicit. They provide evidence-based information about the associated benefits or harms and help patients to consider what matters most to them in relation to the possible outcomes, including doing nothing.
Prescribing decisions support tools are applications which are embedded into GP clinical systems to provide the prescribers with 'real-time' information at the point of prescribing to support safe and cost-effective prescribing.
The use of a prescribing support tool that is integrated into GP clinical systems to aid clinicians with selecting appropriate medication choices has been an approach that has been adopted by most Primary Care teams in England. Integrated prescribing support tools have been installed within Greater Manchester (GM) GP practices clinical systems for many years and have provided a core role in prescribing support across the GM system.
