Central Library Fire Door Replacement

The works consist of the removal and replacement of a series of defective fire doors. To undertake upgrading of the fire stopping and fire walls. To erect a fire lobby and to install directional exit signage, all within the roof void of the Central Library. The extent of the works is laid out within the Schedule of Works and are summarised below: Within Milton Keynes Central Library roof void, there are 2 types of fire break walls, these being: Wall type 1 - are the original Lightweight timber stud wall (double wall) with a 12mm plasterboard panels sandwiched in between. The Stud wall built to underside of steel beam. Above the beam, there are softwood truss rafters , again these are twinned up with 12mm plasterboard panel sandwiched in between. These roof trusses above the steel beams and the timber studworks underneath the beam are clad in visqueen clear plastic sheeting. Wall type 2 are the later installed vertical mineral fire blankets, which have been suspended down form the pitched roof and lap on to the ceiling line. It transpires that the number of these additional fire breaks was excessive and compromised the means of escape. In both walls there are short (average 600 x 800mm fire doors) installed to assist movement between these break wall off a gantry. The walls which are to be retained, and have new fire door installed and upgrading of fire stopping are: Walls - B, C, E, H, J and K The walls which are to be retained, but no longer to be designated as fire break walls and are to have the fire doors removed are: Walls - A, D up to the abutting fire stopping around the Atrium, F and G. Further works Electrical intake and switch room and the old water tank mezzanine floor above. In this area, the contractors is to remove all defective patch repairs to stud walls and fully make good and fire stop around all structural and services breaches and around all wall/floor and wall/pitch roof perimeters. The remedial works are to achieve a minimum of 90mins fire stopping throughout this room and be Certified. To strip out existing door and frame set leading into Roof void at point L9 and replace with a new FD30S fire door and frame set. Staircase into Roof void and above protected stair well. In this area, the contractor is to supply and fit fire blanket from the underside of the roof timber decking down to and onto to the inner face of the blockwork walls on 3No elevations. On the ply lined timber studwork and blockwork wall between stairwell and roof void, the contractors is to supply and fit fire blanket from the underside of the roof timber decking down to and onto to face of the plywood lined studwork and to the top of blockwork walls on this elevation New Lobby in Roof void In this area, the contractor is to construct a new fire rated lobby area.
