Description

Railway Fields Local Nature Reserve is located just off Green Lanes and is Haringey's most unique conservation site. At the heart of the Green Flag Award winning open space sits an educational resource centre providing conservation and wildlife activities for school children and training opportunities for adults.

The site has been managed and run on behalf of the council for many years by conservation charity TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) through partnership agreements. A few years ago the Council and TCV enter a new era with full, long term management responsibility given to TCV with the signing of a lease for the site.

Along with the management of Railway Fields TCV will provide conservation outreach work in many of the borough's open spaces, utilising its wide network of volunteers to creatively manage and enhance the biodiversity of Haringey's green spaces. Currently these volunteer sessions take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Haringey's network of Friends of Parks groups is an integral part of managing Haringey's green spaces. By supporting groups and offering training, their increased knowledge will empower them to lead on conservation improvements in their green spaces.

With the launch of the borough's Parks & Greenspace Strategy in 2023, there is now more of a focus to open up parks and volunteering opportunities to those priority groups, who may currently limit their access to parks.

This requirement will run from 1 September 2024 until 31 March 2025.

Partnering with Alderman Tom F Spence Charity

Ripon City Council (acting as the sole corporate trustee of the Alderman Tom F Spence Charity) invites tenders from experienced and suitably qualified organisations to manage and maintain Quarry Moor Nature Reserve. The appointed organisation will initially be required to develop a Management and Maintenance Plan for Quarry Moor Nature Reserve. The development of the plan should be done in close collaboration with Natural England to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental regulations, including the requirements for SSSI. Once the Management and Maintenance Plan is approved, the organisation will begin implementing the identified maintenance activities and conservation tasks. The following tasks are an example of the core responsibilities and activities that the appointed organisation will be expected to undertake as part of the management and maintenance of Quarry Moor: • Maintain the magnesian limestone grassland by removing scrub • Maintain populations of key species - thistle broomrape, bee orchids, and autumn gentians • Keep the geological exposure clear of vegetation • Take all opportunities to enhance biodiversity by appropriate management. • Ensure compliance with Natural England requirements for SSSI designations. The appointed contractor will be responsible for providing all necessary tools, equipment and resources required for site management and maintenance. The initial contract will be for a period of two years, with a break clause after the 12 months, allowing the possibility of review or termination depending on the contractor's performance or changes in the Charity's requirements. Please read the instructions and return the following documents: • Signed Tender Response with detailed proposal outlining your approach to the management and maintenance of Quarry Moor; • Evidence of experience managing nature reserves, including SSSIs or similar protected areas and references from two similar projects.
