Description
The tenancy for the area known as Tank Farm A at the Port of Workington was abandoned by Cumbria Storage Limited when they elected to go into Liquidation in October 2023. This triggered the automatic notification of the Environment Agency (EA) and Health and Safety Executive (HSE), who have since been working with the Council to ensure safe removal of a large volume of waste oil still on site (~800,000 litres). Having assessed the waste and the deteriorating infrastructure, the Council is now in a position to procure a specialist contractor to remove and dispose of the waste and clean the tanks in preparation for demolition and site remediation under a separate contract. The remediated site will enhance the Port's capability as a transmodal hub, providing a focus for jobs and growth in Workington with a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our existing and future residents.
